A former NFL star, the convicted felon, and now a free-man. OJ Simpson was released from Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada on midnight of October 1st, after serving 9 years.
The Correctional Center has released a video of Simpson walking out of the facility with a baseball hat, oversized jacket, and simple white tennis shoes.
OJ Simpson was charged with kidnapping and armed robbery back in 2007 when he robbed a sports memorabilia dealer at gunpoint in a Las Vegas Hotel.
He was sentenced to 33 years in prison but earlier this year, the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners voted unanimously for OJ’s release after 9 years of serving.
"Mr. Simpson submitted a parole release plan for a residence in Las Vegas, Nevada. The plan was investigated and approved by the Division of Parole and Probation,"
Always being in the middle of media attention, OJ was strategically released on midnight to avoid the press.
“It was incident free, nobody followed,” Brooke Keast, spokeswoman for Nevada Department of Corrections, said. “It was exactly what we’d hoped we could do for public safety.”
Simpson has said to have left with few of his belonging from his time in the correctional facility - “three or four boxes about the size of a microwave”, according to Keast - one filled with legal paperwork and the other with personal items he’d acquired in the prison store.
Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson’s new attorney, added about Simpson’s new journey as a free man.
“I can tell from his voice on the phone last night that he's looking forward to freedom and hugging his family on the outside,” LaVergne said. But further information regarding Simpson’s first hours of freedom will be “confidential until further notice”.
